African Adventure (Part I)

Last week we returned from our African adventure, and it truly was a trip of a lifetime.  My husband and I booked the South Africa Highlights and Safari trip through SmarTours.  The trip got off to a rocky start, as our flight was delayed an entire day due to mechanical issues.  Once we arrived we still squeezed in all the scheduled stops, but missed our free day in Cape Town.  That said, after we got going, I think most of us quickly forgot all about the delay.  As obvious by the photos below, we really lucked out with our Cape Town weather.

Cape Town is at the very bottom of Africa, with the Indian Ocean on one side and the Atlantic on the other,  it sits at the foot of Table Mountain.  You can hike or take a cable car to the top of the mountain (named one of the seven wonders of nature), which was the first thing we did and there could not have been a better way to start the trip.  The views were breathtaking.

After the mountain, we hopped on the bus for a scenic driving tour around Cape Peninsula and to Simon's Town to get a glimpse of the African Penguin colony

The day didn't end there, we continued on to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.  Here we hiked to a beautiful and windy peak for more blue skies and amazing views.

The following day we had a tour of the city below, while the mountain hid beneath the fog.  The colorful Malay Quarter was my favorite, of course.

Later in the afternoon, when the clouds parted, we hopped on a catamaran and got a glimpse of the city and the mountain from the sea.

and of course I wouldn't let an opportunity to shop the markets escape me.

Stay tuned for lots more the rest of the week.
